Take a look in any artist's kit, and you'll likely find at least one mixing medium. From transforming your favorite pigments into liquid form and extending the wear time of the makeup it's mixed into, the possibilities are endless with this powerhouse product.   If you're new to the industry or are hearing about mixing liquid for the first time, you may be wondering where to start. Based in Syracuse, NY, Marcela is a Professional Makeup Artist that has done it all from bridal to portrait and editorial to SFX. She created her look "Element" to pay homage and respect to those lost in a tragic event in her native country of Chile. Marcela: As the MUA and Creative Director for the shoot, I wanted to base the makeup look towards something meaningful to me. I created this concept based on the 2010 Copiapo' mining accident that trapped 33 Chilean miners 2,300 feet below ground in the San Jose copper-gold mine for 69 days as the world watched in terror. The tear is a symbol of what the families suffered as they hoped and prayed for the rescue of their loved ones. I really liked using Cozzette’s Mixing liquid because even though it said it dries quickly, I felt that it allowed more than enough time to work without feeling rushed. I love how it mixed well and it really intensified the metallic pigment . To create her look, Marcela used Danessa Myricks Prism Lotion to prep the skin before adding a layer of Radiance Illuminating Veil mixed with Beauty Oil and Vision Cream Cover in N1 and N2. Jason Alexander Makeup by @jasonalexmua on @leticialoera_ Jason Alex Yapching is a SF Bay based Professional Makeup Artist that specializes in editorial, beauty, and commercial. He knows the importance of creating a flawless base that not only photographs well at a distance but also in extreme closeup shots. Jason: I used one to two drops of Cozzette Matrix Mixing Liquid into foundation to create a long lasting flawless finish with no touch ups in between each look I created. Her looks always start with a healthy and glowing complexion paired with seamless blending of long lasting and waterproof makeup making it ideal for any scenario. Chelsea Marie: I loved working with the mixing liquid because it's very smooth and doesn’t dry out the products. It mixed seamlessly and looks so amazing on the skin ! For brows she used Vision Cream Cover shades W05 and N07, and on the eyes, she combined Colorfix in Pride, Twin Flames in shades Lover and Chestnut, and dusted on a layer of Graftobian Gold Powdered Metal. Jada Arriola Makeup by @jadaciannerriola on model @sierrawatkinson Based in Vancouver, Canada, Jada specializes in editorial, tv, print, film, bridal and high fashion artistry. Her award winning work is known for enhancing features, not eliminating them. Jada: I used the mixing liquid to bring color eyeshadows to life by scraping the eyeshadow on to a palette then adding the liquid. It also was the power source for the gold powder I used. It is a great product for making eyeshadows/creams into a gel-like consistency. It dried down relatively quickly but still gave you plenty of time to blend. This mixing liquid blew my mind. I love how it took any product I mixed it with up a notch with higher/bold pigment. The application was smooth and simple. My favorite thing about it is that it made products almost bullet proof/waterproof after they were applied to the skin. My makeup was going nowhere! This product makes everything super pigmented, and the biggest difference from other products is that it doesn't make the products you mix it with, especially powders and eyeshadows, patchy at all. I’m sure there are at least 100 answers I can give to this question. Why spend an hour on doing the perfect makeup just to have it fade away or move around?   Creating Mask-Proof Makeup If you’ve worn a face mask with makeup on, you know the makeup ends up on your mask, and it’s not pretty. If you’re like me, you remove the mask the minute you get into your car or your home, and this on-and-off motion can be hard on your makeup. A good sealer will help minimize the rub off onto your mask. Beauty lovers, you have a lot to look forward to this year! When it comes to makeup, it looks like the newest trends for 2021 are designed to let us shine no matter what comes our way. We've analyzed the makeup predictions from beauty editors from publications including Who What Wear, Allure, Cosmopolitan, and Elle to compile our Top 5 Beauty Trends for 2021. 5. "Lived-In" Eye Looks It's no surprise that eyes will be the main focus for many beauty lovers in 2021. This trend is all about creating a gaze that's a little less perfected, and a lot of smudging and extra blending are highly encouraged. Usually reserved for nighttime looks or special occasions, this look is forecasted to become an everyday staple. Marie Claire showcased these lived-in looks from fashion houses like Paco Rabanne and Chanel, while Elle mentioned this eye trend as one of Lady Gaga's current favs. Get the look: Take an eyeliner pencil like the Make Up For Ever Aqua Resist Color Pencil and draw a fairly thick line across the upper lash line, and smudge using a smudger brush. Take an eyeshadow in a similar tone and blend well beyond the crease. Taking the same eyeliner, line the lower outer half of your lower lash line and smudge generously. For a more diffused look, skip the eyeliner application on the lower lash line and use the remaining liner on your brush to add a dash of diffused color along your lower lash line. The Return of Bold Colors Colorful eyeshadow is making a comeback with purple and blue being the standout colors, according to InStyle and Marie Claire. For lips, punchy peaches, vibrant berries, orange-based reds and grungy tones were paired with minimal eye looks on the runways of Giorgio Armani and Balmain. As the world continues to change, our industry continues to evolve. In the next few years, we should all be settled into a new normal, right? WRONG! We are always evolving, changing how we do things and moving forward. Science, medicine, and technology; these are things that will continue to change your life, my life and the lives of everyone that comes after us. Most of our best inventions were born out of necessity. I believe COVID will bring new inventions, new processes and new medications that one day will most likely solve problems that aren’t even COVID-related. So there is never really a “new normal,” just a changing landscape to which we adapt as we move through life. So, what will the next few years look like? The next few years in this industry will be more sanitary. The days when clients look the other way at a dirty brush coming at their face are gone. Big jobs like weddings and movie productions will require a lot of brushes, and quick sanitation methods. Manufacturers are responding quickly to our needs with really good sanitation products. For me, this is exciting because we needed these all along. Investments in Sanitation Are a Tax Write-Off As an Artist you should invest in sanitation. Remember, the tools of your trade are tax-deductible. Make sure you keep all of your receipts and talk to your accountant to get more specifics. Now let’s chat about what you should be investing in. Sterilization One of my favorite new methods for sanitizing makeup and brushes is the SterileLite ILLUMICIDE Surface Disinfecting Case. This is a game changer for artists and hair stylists who need to sanitize thoroughly and quickly. This not only sanitizes your brushes and makeup, but it also dries your brushes! For what more can you ask? It also helps put your clients at ease. Clients watch everything we do, and some watch very closely. When they see your SterileLite, they will know you run a sanitary business; they know you invested in their health and well-being and that makes all the difference to many clients. Sanitation Wipes and Sprays You should be sanitizing your hands constantly right in front of your clients. This will help put them at ease and will help to keep you, your client, and your makeup tools germ free. One of my favorite sanitizers is the JAO Refresher Hand Sanitizer Spray. Double protection for you and your client because of course your client will be mask-free. Thermometers Should you carry a forehead thermometer? It can’t hurt, and they are very affordable. So why not just keep one in your kit? This would be your first step in the process. Before anyone sits in your chair you should probably take a temperature reading. I know people can carry the virus without having a fever, but why not check? You don’t want to work on anyone with a fever even if it’s not COVID. A fever indicates they may be sick with something that you don’t want to catch. While this may seem extreme to some people, in the end, you and your client will be more at ease. And yes, even a thermometer for your kit is tax-deductible. Disinfection Let’s not forget disinfecting our workstations and everything around us. I prefer Rejuvenate. This is a hospital-grade, non-irritating, and eco-friendly disinfectant. It comes in wipes and sprays, so you can choose whichever you like best. Some people prefer wipes to sprays and both are great tools.   Sold out Sold out Sold out Adjusting Your Business Practices Market What You Do You may want to advertise your sanitation methods on your website. I believe having a section about your personal precautions on the job is a good idea. Many companies that serve their customers in public are doing this now.  They explain the temperature reading, the mask, and all the sanitation practices they abide by.  Artists that use contracts (and most do)  should also add this to their contracts.  It’s important that people know up front that you will not be able to work on them if they have a fever. Sanitize the Negativity Now that I’ve covered the physical precautions, let’s talk about the mental aspects of working during this pandemic. People are all very different, and some people take this pandemic more seriously than others. People are under a lot of stress right now. Attitudes and outlooks range from “it’s all fake” to “I haven’t left my house in seven months and won’t until there’s a vaccine.” Don’t assume that everyone feels like you do. From a business standpoint, my suggestion is to just listen to what your clients are saying but don’t counter or argue. Clients and customers are not friends and family, they’re paying you to perform a service and be hospitable. Think of clients and customers like your guests, and you are the host or hostess. I suggest that politics, religion, and opinions on health matters should probably be topics that (as a service provider) you should avoid. This is why a lot of people lose clients. Don’t try to talk a client into believing the virus really does or does not exist, as that’s not your job. Just let them know what the laws are in your state and what you legally need to do to stay in business. Cancellations As a service provider you may see a lot of people cancelling at the last minute because they “don’t feel well.” Under normal circumstances, most professionals charge a cancellation fee. Many businesses are changing this practice due to COVID. You may want to allow last minute rescheduling without a fee. Even airlines are allowing changes without a fee now. You really don’t want to see someone who has been exposed to COVID and ordered to stay home for 2 weeks, as you really shouldn’t be working on anyone that doesn’t feel well. My suggestion is to stay flexible for now. Above all, try your best to stay positive because many people are struggling and need help adapting to the changes we all have to go through. Conclusions We all need to adjust our sails to the wind because we can’t change the direction of the wind. This is harder for some people than others. It’s best to recognize this, and be thoughtful and prepared with kindness to counter opposition. Keep positive, because as bad as this all seems in the end it will bring about some better sanitation standards that should stay with us for a very long time. Please stay healthy and sanitary! Jen: I started using TEMPTU about six years ago when I was in school for makeup. I had no idea what airbrush makeup was at that point, and it’s now one of the most used products in my kit. Makeup and Photography by Jen Damminger Color Matching & Different Skin Types with TEMPTU CRC: Tell us about color matching with TEMPTU and how it compares to the process with other products you've worked with? Jen: Color matching is one of the most nerve-wracking things about being a makeup artist. No one wants to look like a ghost in photos or have that line of foundation at the jawline if the foundation is too dark. For me, color matching comes with time and lots and lots of practice. When I had the TEMPTU compressor and airbrush gun where I had to physically load the foundation, it was easier to color match because I would be able to pour out a small amount onto my palette and test it on someone’s jawline, whereas now, using the TEMPTU Air, the foundation is already loaded into the foundation pods that I then load onto my cordless compressor so it makes it more difficult and a little more time consuming to do. However, practice makes perfect, and I know they have the TEMPTU Air Pod Pro DUO that allows you to mix any airbrush foundations to create the custom shade you need, load it into the Pod, and airbrush away! Working with the TEMPTU Air for the past few years now, I can just look at someone and know what color I will need to use on them. To double check, I hold the pod up to their neck or chest and can compare the tones in their skin to the tones in the makeup. CRC: What about different skin types or textures? Jen: SKIN PREP IS EVERYTHING! I’ve had brides who come in for their trial and their skincare routine is next to nothing and when I airbrush them, you can tell that their skin isn’t taken care of very well and needs some tender loving care, even after I skin prep them. Once their wedding comes around and I’ve gotten them on a decent skincare routine, the results are mind blowing. You can physically tell the differences between the two separate applications. No matter what skin type you have, TEMPTU will hands down perform amazingly, but skin prep is everything. Having freshly moisturized and prepped skin will enhance its benefits and help the airbrush makeup last even longer. CRC: What are some of the other things you find TEMPTU to be superior at? Jen: It is great to cover tattoos. I may need to use one or two shades on a tattoo coverup, but I like to use a high pigment concealer before I airbrush and then airbrush over top of that. The actual act of airbrushing also helps with the covering process because you're not pressing and spreading the product, it's being directly applied to the skin without any manipulation and once it dries I'll set it with powder. There may be a couple of layers but any more than two or three may start to look too artificial, so just be mindful. If you can, do a trial run with your client ahead of time. The Perks and Pros of TEMPTU CRC: Tell us how your kit contents change when using TEMPTU. Jen: TEMPTU makes it so easy to pack your airbrush into your kit. I'm pretty sure I screamed with excitement when they announced they were coming out with the TEMPTU Air. It has made airbrushing multiple clients in a single job, like a larger bridal party, so much easier. It has been amazing! CRC: Experiencing the makeup firsthand can really help you learn more about how it feels, wears, and performs. Have you ever used it on yourself? Jen: I have airbrushed myself only a handful of times but have worn TEMPTU for close to 22 hours. Yes, 22 hours. I did the makeup for the large bridal party in the morning and attended the wedding after. I airbrushed myself early in the morning so I wouldn’t have to do it in the afternoon after I had worked all morning. I danced the night away. So overall, it was about 21-22 hours with maybe 1-2 touchups and the touchups consisted of just a little powder. When I say this makeup lasts, it lasts. For touchups throughout the day, I suggest just a compact with some pressed powder, either translucent or with pigment that matches your skin tone, to touchup, especially in the t-zone where we tend to get oily and makeup can start to separate. CRC: If you could recommend just ONE product, what would it be and why?Jen: Since the TEMPTU Air has to be used with a product to work, I'll choose two! I love the TEMPTU Air for it's ease of use, and my go-to TEMPTU product is the SilkSphere Foundation. I use SilkSphere foundation versus the Perfect Canvas foundation. SilkSphere offers more of a luminous finish, which I prefer to work with. It has built in color correctors making coverage really easy! There's also a built in primer to create a flawless finish. I love a good, luminous finish! I think this is more of a personal preference. If I have a client with oily skin, I just make sure to prep them a little differently and give them just a bit extra powder. Regardless of the type of skin, I feel the SilkSphere looks good on everyone. Sold out Sold out Sold out CRC: If someone looks at your work on Instagram, they will see a lot of before and after photos of your clients. Tell us why you like to include them! Jen: I believe before and after photos are so important! How are you going to know the kind of work I did without it?! I know it may not be as aesthetically pleasing to see on Instagram compared to only having professional photos, but I'd much rather know the quality of work an artist can do rather than the color scheme of their Instagram feed.   CRC: Any final tips or advice to folks that are interested in TEMPTU? Jen: Airbrush makeup isn’t cheap to keep in your kit so see if it is something that will overall pay for itself. If it’s something that you know you will profit from, read about the different kinds of airbrush makeup TEMPTU offers and how it is made so you know what you’ll be working with. If you start researching and you really feel like it’s all over your head, ASK! Ask a fellow pro artist on Instagram (I’m always willing to help!). Never be afraid to reach out. Search through hashtags and find other artists that use TEMPTU to see who has your style and go from there. If you decide to invest, practice on friends and family. Ask people to be your test models. No one’s skin is the same so your results will always vary and you’ll learn so much from that. Confidence is key when using airbrush makeup on clients because it's a form of makeup they likely haven't used before. This “blotting” helps to set and stabilize your foundation before applying a setting powder. Blotting also prevents powder from looking blotchy and creates a smooth, flawless complexion. PRO TIP #3: Never apply powder heavily. Only apply enough to produce a beautiful matte finish. If you can see the powder, you have applied too much. Lightly brush it off.  For extra sheer coverage:  Put a dime-sized amount of moisturizer in the palm of your hand. Using a stainless steel makeup spatula and palette set, mix half of the moisturizer with a small amount of Ultrabase Foundation. Apply with your fingers, a sponge or brush. For full coverage (to conceal imperfections): Apply moisturizer on your face, and allow it to absorb into the skin for several minutes. Once your face is dry, apply Ultrabase Foundation with a sponge or foundation brush. Blend well! How To Choose Your Joe Blasco Ultrabase Foundation Shade Find the color category of your skin tone at the top of the chart below. On the color match guide, you’ll see foundation cream color names listed below each color category. Every foundation color shown in the box will work well on your skin tone.
