Larger brush strokes can be used for this step. Step 3: All About the Details Use a small liner brush with the paint to create "fur" by using short, quick strokes. PRO Tip: The harder you press the brush against your face, the thicker each line of fur will be. It may be time consuming, but using light strokes will help you create a look that is more realistic! Step 4: Add Dimension & Highlight To help give the look depth, layer a light, medium, and dark shade of paint. This will help mimic the look for real fur. For this installment of our Back to the Basic SFX Tutorials, we are covering which paint is best option for you based on the type of look and effect you're trying to create. For this blog and tutorial, we partnered with @Nsomniaksdream to highlight the differences between water activated and alcohol activated paints. You may recognize @Nsomniaksdream from her spectacular YouTube makeup tutorials showcasing her talent in SFX, body painting, fantasy, and cosplay makeup. The Different Types of Water Activated Paint Water activated paints are a fan favorite because they're relatively easy to work with and provide full color payoff. However, there are different types of water activated paints, and they each have their pros and cons.   Water activated paints are typically broken down into two categories: wax-based and glycerin-based. This is important to note because this can affect the overall look of your makeup. Let's break it down. Glycerin-Based Paint Glycerin-based water-activated paints are great for blendability. These paints are fantastic for creating highlights, low lights, or gradients between different colors. You also have the capability to build or layer the colors without cracking. PRO TIP: These paints are a great option for all-over body or character makeup looks like Venom, Gamora, or Avatar. Water Activated Paints (Glycerin or Talc-Based) Mehron Paradise Makeup AQ LEARN MORE Ben Nye MagiCake Aqua Paint Palettes LEARN MORE Graftobian ProPaints LEARN MORE Kryolan Aquacolor Palette LEARN MORE Wax-Based Paint Wax-based paints have a slightly heavier formula that makes them great for detail work. These paints will offer an impactful pigment payoff and a fast dry time. However, if you apply too many layers, it will tend to crack and separate since it is slightly thicker in consistency than its glycerin-based counterpart. As a result, it is also slightly harder to achieve a perfectly blended ombre or gradient-like effect, but don't worry! The thicker formula does have its advantages! It allows you to create a longer and crisper line for line-work and detailing compared to water-based paints. PRO TIP: These paints are a great option for creating detail for looks like a sugar skull or mermaid with outlined scales. Both types of paints need to be activated with water. A spray bottle with water can be used to spritz a small about of water directly onto the cake. You can then use a brush or sponge to apply the makeup. Another method is to have a cup of water nearby and dipping your brush in water then mixing the wet brush into the paint until you get the desired consistency. Using too much water or not enough water will affect the consistency and color payoff of the makeup. Sponges are great to use to cover a large area of the body. You can also use different types of sponges like stipple sponges or sea sponges to create texture on your look. PRO TIP: Substitute water with a mixing liquid-like Mehron Mixing Liquid or Ben Nye Liquiset to extend the wear of your glycerin-based water-activated paints. This does not work with wax-based water-activated paints. Sealing Water Activated Paints Water activated paints are great to create bright vibrant characters for superhero, cosplay, or fantasy looks. However, we highly recommend using a sealer if you’ll be wearing the look for an extended period of time. Since these paints are activated by water, rain or sweat will also cause them to re-activate and will impact the wearability. A theatrical or professional grade sealer like Ben Nye Final Seal or Blue Marble SELR will help lock in the look and make it sweat and water-resistant. These paints are water and sweat resistant, and as a result, they're also tricker to remove. To activate this paint, 99% Isopropyl Alcohol or an Activator must be used. Anything less like 70% alcohol may destroy your makeup. Alcohol activated paints will provide you with a unique translucency that can be hard to get with water activated or cream paints. The reason being is the makeup appears to be embedded into the skin. Alcohol activated paints are fantastic for creating veins, fake tattoos, and irritated skin around wounds. This paint is not ideal for doing full body makeup since the paint is more transparent and tends to be more costly in comparison to other paints. Alcohol activated paint is ideal for detail work or for creating realistic makeup or wound makeup. Since these paints are activated with 99% alcohol, natural hair brushes may become dried out or damaged, so opt for synthetic bristled brushes. Synthetic stipple sponges are also great to use to add texture to your makeup. Since 99% alcohol tends to evaporate fairly quickly, there is a shorter working time with these paints. If you're applying alcohol activated paints to sensitive skin, 99% alcohol may be too harsh and drying. However, depending on your skin type and how long you're wearing the paint, slight staining may occur in more porous areas of the body or face. In this case, using an oil-based cleanser or makeup remover with help with the removal process. Alcohol activated paints can be removed by activating the area with more alcohol or activator. However, we also offer several products that are created to be gentler on the skin and designed specifically to remove tough to remove makeup and special effects products including PPI Telesis Super Solv Extra Strength Adhesive Remover and PPI Telesis Makeup Remover. Keep in mind this blood does not dry down and stay wet and runny after it is applied. It is the perfect choice for special effects including fresh wounds. Ben Nye Thick Blood Ben Nye Thick Blood is a slightly darker shade of red and is used to resemble blood that is beginning to clot. This long-lasting formula has a thick and chunky gel-like consistency and will not have a runny consistency. However, this blood can be smoothed out for a less chunky and brighter appearance, if desired.   PRO TIP: Use a small amount of Thick Blood with a metal spatula to create a line on the face or body to resemble a scratch or cut. Ben Nye Fresh Scab Ben Nye Fresh Scab is a dark rusty red color and is used to create a scab effect. The consistency is a thick gel-like consistency. This blood is ideal for creating a wound that is starting to heal, as this will add texture to the area applied.   Kryolan Eye Blood Kryolan Eye Blood in Red is a Halloween best seller. This blood can be applied directly to the eye using the dropper. Do not use in conjunction with eye contacts (prescription or sfx). The Kryolan Eye Blood has liquid consistency. Upon your first use, this product may feel slight heavy in the eye. Your vision may also be slightly blurry. The special effect of the eye blood is temporary. As you blink the effect will go away. Please note, once you open the bottle, this product has a 30-day shelf life. PRO TIP: Apply the blood to the top part of the eyeball to cover the entire eye and for slightly longer effect. You're Camera Ready! Mouth Blood: K.D. 151 Mouth Blood Dark & Ben Nye Complete Blood Cap Pack Both K.D. 151 Mouth Blood and Ben Nye Stage Blood are safe to use in mouth. The K.D. 151 Mouth has a syrup-like consistency. The nozzle on the bottle will allow for a precise and easy application. By patting the blood around the mouth with your finger will allow you to create speckled effect with the blood. Ben Nye Complete Blood Cap Pack includes a .5 oz of Stage Blood and 12-empty capsules. Fill the capsule with the Stage Blood and close with the top half of the capsule. Once you are ready for the effect, place the capsule in your mouth and bite down. The summer season may be winding down, but that doesn't have to mean your summer glow has to fade away! From body glow to award-winning self tanning products, we are sharing our favorites to keep your skin radiant and glowing all year long. Step 1: Cleanse When it comes to skincare, many of us focus on face products, but your body deserves a little TLC, too! We're proud to offer a range of skincare brands including clean beauty brands and brands that have a rich history in the pharmaceutical and dermatology industries like Avene, Kiehl's, and Bioderma. RCMA Cream Foundation has been a staple in many artists’ kits for decades, so it's no surprise the makeup community was abuzz with excitement when RCMA released their new Liquid Foundation and Liquid Concealer this year. These water-free highly-pigmented formulations are made with ingredients like squalane to hydrate and help replenish the skin. The result is a high-definition quality finish that feels light enough for everyday wear and performs well for all forms of makeup artistry. To help you learn how to use the new products, we spoke with the team at RCMA to help answer some of your most frequently asked questions. Cream vs. Liquid RCMA's cream foundation is known for being highly-pigmented, and the new Liquid Foundation and Liquid Concealer have the same high pigmentation that you love! Our Beauty Advisor Calvin put it to the test, and he was able to cover his tattoo with ease. Q: Can the new liquid foundation and liquid concealer be used with my existing cream-based RCMA products? RCMA: For optimal performance, we recommend using the Liquid Foundation and Liquid Concealer together. However, we know our cream-based foundation is loved and an industry standard. Both the liquid foundation and liquid concealer can be used and mixed with our cream foundation and cream adjusters. Q: Is there any correlation between the cream-based colors and the new formulation? RCMA: There is no shade correlation between the two lines. People with cooler/beige undertones that would like a more neutral look should pick a very slightly warmer (peachy coral) foundation (the P series).   People with warmer/peachy undertones that would like a more natural look should pick a slightly golden or olive tone (the G Series). For those with neutral undertones, the N Series is the best choice, as it has truly neutral undertones. PRO TIP: While there isn't a true correlation between the shades, the guide below will be a good starting point to help you find a shade the liquid formulas. As always, you can mix various shades to create the perfect match, and for the best color match, you may always buy a sample or contact our Beauty Advisors! Shinto Shade Approximate Liquid Foundation Shade Shinto 1 N 210 with a dab of N 230 Shinto 2 N 310 to G 330 Shinto 3 G 410 Shinto 4 P 410 Shinto 5 Between G430 & G530 Q: Why isn't there a P Series for the Liquid Concealer? RCMA: We decided against a P Series for the Liquid Concealer because we found that the N Series was the perfect complement to the skin tones that were using the P Series in the Liquid Foundation. The New Formula Q: What are the benefits of the new formula being water-free? RCMA: Many formulations on the market have a tendency to oxidize over time. The oxidation reaction usually only occurs in water-based formulas.   Our water-free formula will never shift in color giving an all-day flawless look. Q: What type of artistry is the new formula ideal for? Editorial, bridal, print, commercial, etc.? RCMA: The formula has high coverage and provides a natural finish, so it is ideal for all types of artistry. It performs well on camera, and the olive oil derivatives and silica provide a skin-smoothing quality and keep the complexion fresh all day long for events and weddings. Tips to Use the New Formula Q: Is a brush or a sponge better? RCMA: Both tools work well. They are thicker than other liquid-based formulas, so they will not soak into your sponge as much as other liquid products can. Just like with the original cream formula, the foundation and concealer are highly pigmented and can be sheered out to your preferred coverage. PRO TIP: The new formula is water-free, so do not use a water-based mixing medium. Opt for silicone-based, oil-based, or wax-based mixing mediums. Q: Do you have to set the foundation? RCMA: We recommend setting it with the new Premiere Powder. The Pressed Premiere Powder is the perfect finishing touch to set the foundation and concealer into place and will provide a slightly matte finish to the areas you set. It's finely milled and can be used for touch-ups and will not look powdery or dry thanks to ingredients like Laurel Lysine and Butter Powder. Additionally, the new shades we added provide a brightening effect for different skin tones while blurring minor imperfections. Amber has a light peach tint that adds slight warmth to the skin. Topaz has a tint of warm brown to warm up medium to deep skin tones. If your client or model has dark circles or dull skin, Amethyst provides a brightening and softening effect. Q: What are the differences between the Pressed and Loose Premiere Powders? RCMA: The Loose Premiere Powder comes in three shades (Amber, Topaz, and No-Color) and can be used before applying foundation to provide extra oil control. The pressed is more of a finishing/touch-up product. The Loose Premiere Powder is intended for setting and baking. Stocking Your Kit with the New Products What shades should I add to my kit? Ready to try the new formula but aren't sure where to start? We recommend starting with the N Series and picking up a few shades. Start with the lightest shade that you feel matches your client base and grab a few more shades (skip two or three shades in between) so you have a wide range of shades to play with. The N Series is neutral, so use your Foundation Adjuster Palette to adjust the foundation to match your clients. After using it for several jobs, if you notice you are using the yellow adjuster frequently, you should add some shades from the G Series. If you are reaching for the red adjuster, add a few shades from the P Series to your kit, as it has the peachy and coral undertones you have been mixing. How are the new Premiere Powders different than the Original No Color Powder and other RCMA Powders? The new Premiere Powders offer three new shades and an updated formulation of No Color Powder. Amethyst is lightly tinted violet to provide a brightening effect for all skin tones, Amber adds a light tint of warmth for light to medium complexions, and Topaz has a slight warm brown tint that will add warmth for complexions ranging from medium to the richest deep shades. The powder is very finely milled and provides a blurring effect that helps smooth light imperfections, and it can be used numerous times throughout the day for touchups.
