PRO Tips: Quick Tips & Live Demo Using Mehron 3D Gel

When it comes to SFX makeup, nothing is more rewarding than creating your own prosthetics, wounds, or scars. Mehron 3D Gel is the perfect product to use to make all three, but using this product takes a little practice. That's why we are sharing some of our top tips in this blog! If you missed our Camera Ready Live on our @camerareadysfx account, you may watch the replay below! Warming With the Microwave Method In order to use the product, you will need to warm it slightly to achieve a liquid consistency. However, it's important to warm it gently and to test the temperature before you apply it to the skin to ensure you do not burn yourself or your client. Take the cap off, and microwave the gel in five to 10-second increments. Each time, remove it from the microwave and tilt the bottle to see how liquified the gel is. If it's still too solid, remove the cap and warm for another 5-10 seconds. Keep repeating this process until it flows freely inside the bottle, you're ready. Pour the gel into a shallow container to allow it to cool slightly before application. Use a steel spatula to mix the product to remove any air bubbles, and once the liquid has thickened up slightly, you may begin to test the temperature of it on the back of your hand. Apply a very small amount while testing. PRO Tip: Do not overheat. Doing so can cause the formula to break and become unusable. The consistency of the gel will be a similar to honey when it is ready to be applied. Warming With the Boiling Water Method Many artists prefer the boiling water method because it's much less likely that you'll overheat the gel. First, heat some water until it begins to boil. Fill a cup with the boiling water, and place the capped bottle into it until the gel melts. This takes on average between three to five minutes. Once you see it has melted, take the bottle out of the water and tilt it to view the consistency. Once it is a true liquid, pour it into a shallow dish and allow it to cool until it reaches a comfortable temperature. PRO Tip: You may color the gel with Mehron’s Liquid Makeup or Fantasy F/X makeup while it is liquefied Setting the Gelatin The gelatin will remain slightly tacky once it is applied, so set it with Colorset Powder to knock back the shine and to prep it for painting. This step will also help it stay in place for longer wear.   Removing the Gelatin Removal is quick and easy with Mehron 3D Gel! Gently peel away, and always wash with soap and water when you're done. PRO Tips: How to Refresh Your Skincare Routine for Fall

For many of us, the fall season brings a welcome break from hot and humid weather, but it can also come with some less than desirable changes. That's right. We're talking about dry, dull, and flaky skin. We asked our Beauty Advisor and in-house esthetician, Chelsie, to share her top tips for both your personal routine and for makeup artists as we head into autumn. Tips for Your Personal Routine For the Face If your routine normally includes a gel-based cleanser, consider switching to a cream cleanser for extra comfort. Likewise, opt for richer & emollient moisturizers to replenish skin, and seal in hydration with an oil-based serum like One Love Organics Botanical E Youth Preservation Serum or Saint Jane Luxury Beauty Serum.    For the Body If you have a few pesky dry patches, you're not alone. Regular exfoliation is fine during the cooler months, but beware of over-exfoliating! If your routine normally calls for a weekly exfoliation, try switching the products you're using before assuming you need to exfoliate more. Try a gentle exfoliation tool like the Esker Body Plane or switch to a deeply hydrating product like the Indie Lee Coconut Citrus Scrub. Next, nourish your skin with an emollient moisturizer, like Milk + Honey Body Cream or Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Balm, to hydrate without an oily finish.     Finally, don't forget to top off your routine with a daily dose of SPF. Just because the sun is hiding out a little more this time of year doesn’t mean we should stop applying sunscreen daily. Broad Spectrum SPF 30 & higher can help prevent photo-aging by about 90% — so using sunscreen daily to protect your skin all year long is important! Murad City Skin Age Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 and Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench SPF 45 Hyaluronic Cloud Moisturizer are both great options to protect your skin from those harmful rays every day, and they also work well under makeup. Tips for Makeup Artists As you know, everyone’s skin is different and always changing, so having products for every skin type will help you no matter the season. To prepare for more dry faces in your chair, grab the Bioderma Hydrabio micellar water, which is better suited for dehydrated skin than the alternate, Bioderma Sensibio. If you love the Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre, consider keeping the richer formulation Embryolisse 302000 Filaderme Emulsion Peaux Seches on hand. If your client has sensitized skin, a great option is Embryolisse Lait-Creme Sensitive. While using the heater on cold days, combat dryness by placing a bowl of water, or a humidifier, in each room to prevent water from evaporating from your skin. For further protection, end your skincare routine with a facial oil rather than using it before your moisturizer to help protect your skin’s barrier. This will allow it to work as a sealant and prevent further moisture loss from the skin. To achieve this bright white base, apply Mehron Skin Prep Pro to your face and neck. This will help the makeup stay in place. Next, block your eyebrows with Mehron SynWax, and set them using the Mehron Colorset Powder. Use a sponge to blend Mehron Clown White Makeup all over your face and set with powder. Step 2: Paint the Body Using the same sponge used for the face, blend Mehron Clown White Makeup onto your neck and shoulders. Set with a thin layer of powder. Step 3: Contour Using the Mehron CreamBlend Stick in Light Grey, begin mapping out the contour along your cheeks, nose, and jawline. Next, follow up with a small amount of Mehron Celebre Pro Cream Foundation in Black to darken the contour and blend out with a sponge.   PRO Tip: If you apply too much black cream, use a clean sponge and clown white to soften the area. To hollow out the face to give an undead effect, apply a grey eyeshadow beneath your contour to create shadows. Next, apply a black eyeshadow to the jawline with a brush. Step 5: Define the Eyes Line your eyes using a black eyeliner, and use a skipping technique to create short lines on the outer lid to elongate your eyes. Apply eyeliner to the lower lash line, and create a smokey effect using a black eyeshadow. Step 6: Define the Lips and Nose Use a black eyeshadow to the contour your lips. Next, add a little bit of the same shadow to the tip of your nose to create a shadowy effect. Take the black kohl pencil and apply to the innermost part of your lips and blend it outward. Step 7: Add Details To bring a little life and color back to the face, take a small amount of Mehron CreamBlend Stick in the shade Soft Peach, and apply it to the high points of your cheeks, forehead, and chin. Next, add texture around your eyes and lips. Dip a stipple sponge into Mehron's Celebre Pro Cream Foundation in Black and press the sponge in light dabbing motions against the skin. Step 7: Give the Body Dimension Add a bit of depth and dimension by creating shadows along the chest and neck with a small, flat brush and a black eyeshadow. Take the stipple sponge and black cream foundation to apply texture to the hollowed out areas. Step 8: Finishing Rouches Apply Mehron Hair White to the hairline with a brush and blend the color through your hair with your fingers. How to Create a Wound: SFX Tutorial, Pt. 26

One of the easiest ways to kick up your SFX look is to add a cut or a wound, but mastering this technique can be pretty tricky if you don't know where to start. We partnered with SFX artist @Nsomniaksdream to share her favorite tips and tricks for creating wounds from scratch. If you're squeamish or do not like the sight of fake blood, we do not recommend reading this blog or watching the tutorial. Before You Begin It can be tempting to dive headfirst into the world of SFX makeup, but it's important to learn about the products you will be using before you begin. Any time you use a new product, perform a spot test on your skin before applying to larger areas to see if your skin is sensitive to the ingredients, and always work in well-ventilated areas. Make sure you gather all the tools you will need before you start, and don’t forget to have the proper remover for the products you’re using. Most importantly, practice often, and have fun!   Technique #1: Liquid Latex & Tissue Tools Needed: liquid latex, stainless steel palette, double-ended spatula, disposable wedge sponge, wooden sculpting tool, setting powder, fx paint, stipple sponge, brushes (for painting), and fake blood. Step 1: Add a quarter-size dollop of liquid latex onto your stainless steel palette. Apply a thin layer to the skin in the shape that you want the wound to be. Step 2: Rip apart small sections of the tissue and roll into worm-like rolls. The rolled effect closely mimics healing skin and will make the wound look more realistic. Apply the rolls of tissue to your skin into the shape of the wound you want to create. If you need to move the rolls on the liquid latex, carefully move them using the spatula. Once you're happy with the placement, use the sponge to apply a thin layer of liquid latex to blend out the edges and set with powder. Step 3: It's time to paint! Using your favorite fx makeup, start with a bright red color to resemble fresh blood. Add various shades of darker red, brownish tones, and even a hint of blue-based red to resemble drying blood, bruising, and the various stages of healing. Step 4: Add fake blood, but resist the urge to add too much. Fill the inside of the wound with gel-based blood to mimic coagulated blood, and add a liquid SFX blood to the edges. If you want to create the look of road rash or blood splatter, take a stipple sponge and tap it lightly against the fake blood and the areas surrounding the wound. PRO Tip: If you want the wound to look like it happened more recently, use a blood that is brighter red like PPI Fleet Street Bloodworks Drying Blood in the shade Fresh. If you want to make it look like an aging wound, opt for shades that have a brownish-red hue like PPI Fleet Street Bloodworks Drying Blood in the shade Dark. Technique #2: Nose & Scar Wax Wound Tools Needed: spirit gum, Nose & Scar Wax, double-ended spatula, wooden modeling tool, Vaseline, fx makeup, stipple sponge, brushes (for painting), and fake blood. Step 1: To prep the skin for application, paint on a thin layer of spirit gum to help the wax adhere to your skin. Step 2: Use the spatula to sanitarily scoop out some Nose & Scar Wax (the amount you need will vary based on how large of a wound you're creating) and warm it up by rolling it into worm-like rolls. Just like you did with the liquid latex, apply each roll on to your skin in the shape that you want the wound to resemble. Once the rolls are in place, smooth over the edges with the wooden modeling tool. PRO Tip: This technique is best for creating a wound in an area that doesn't move very much, like on the décolletage or the top of your arm. Nose & Scar Wax is very pliable when it's warmed, but as it cools, very thin sections may be prone to cracking if it is moved around too much by body movement. Step 4: Add a small layer of Vaseline to your finger tips and lightly smooth the edges of the rolls to create a seamless transition from the wax to your skin. Step 5: Use the sculpting tool and spatula to shape the wound, and smooth any raw edges that you create. Step 6: Paint and add SFX blood as desired. Technique #3: 3rd Degree Silicone Compound Wounds Tools Needed: 3rd Degree Silicone Modeling Compound, wooden popsicle sticks (for mixing), stainless steel palette, 99% alcohol, double-ended spatula, disposable wedge sponge, setting powder, concealer that matches your skin tone, fx makeup, stipple sponge, brushes (for painting), and fake blood. Step 1: 3rd Degree Silicone Modeling Compound consists of separately packaged formulas that create a modeling medium once mixed together. To ensure you do not cross-contaminate while scooping out the product, we recommend taking two popsicle sticks and labeling one A and the other B. Only using the A stick to scoop out of the A jar and the B stick into the B jar. It's important to mix the two formulas in a 1:1 ratio, so having a way to accurately measure the weights or eyeballing it with accuracy is key to success! Place the A and B formulas onto separate sections of your stainless steel palette, and use the spatula to mix them together. Step 2: The application process is similar to the previous two methods. Apply the compound directly to the skin in worm-like rolls to create the wound. Continue shaping the wound using the spatula until you're happy with the overall shape. To blend the edges, dip the flat end of your spatula into 99% alcohol and press it against the edges of the wound and pull outward toward your skin. If you accidentally flatten it more than you wanted to, mix up a little more of the compound and build it up using the same worm-like roll technique. PRO Tip: Work in small sections! Once the compound has cured, the product will harden. It’s easy to mix together a new batch of the compound to ensure you do not waste any product. Step 3: The compound will be shiny once dry. This is great for creating a freshly healed burn, but if you want to have a more natural finish, use the disposable sponge and setting powder to knock back the shine. Step 4: Apply makeup to make the wound look like it's part of your skin, paint, and add SFX blood as desired! Additional Tips Adding SFX embellishments like fake glass, fake nails, or staples can really add to the effect. If you want to add additional props, be sure to apply them before adding fake blood. Simply add a layer of Pros-Aide to the inside of the wound and allow it to dry slightly. Once it is slightly opaque, attach the prop and hold it in place for a minute to allow the adhesive to grip onto it. Set with a light dusting of powder, and add SFX blood around the base of the prop for maximum impact. How to Remove the Wound Always practice safe removal techniques while working with SFX products. Ripping off the products can peel off skin cells and cause irritation, so use a professional-grade remover like Ben Nye Bond Off or PPI Telesis Super Solv Extra Strength Adhesive Remover to break down the products without damaging your skin.   Feeling Inspired? It will help the makeup stay in place and keep your skin matte throughout the day. Take the Mehron Paradise AQ Palette and draw a star outline on your left eye. When you're happy with the shape, fill it in! Once the paint is dry, apply a thin layer of AdGem to the star and add red glitter on top of the star. PRO Tip: @ry_fx blocked his left eyebrow before applying Skin Prep Pro to create a smooth canvas before applying paint. To block your brows, gently warm a small amount of Mehron Modeling Wax and smooth it across your brows. Set with powder before applying makeup. Move on to the other eye and use black and red from the Paradise Palette to create a bold eyeliner look. Start with the black paint on the outer half of your eye and let it dry before using red paint on the inner half. This will help prevent you from accidentally smearing the black paint into the red paint while you're painting the inner half of your lid. Add a thin layer of AdGem and add black glitter on top of the black paint and red glitter on top of the red paint. Paint a black triangle above your eyebrow and three smaller downward-pointing triangles below your eye. Add any additional glitter or embellishments you'd like! To give your look more dimension, use a diluted mixture of the red paint to contour your face. Step 2: Move on to the Neck Once you're happy with your eyes, it's time to move on to the neck! Many clowns have a pleated or striped collar, so paint on alternative vertical stripes or red and black for maximum impact. Step 3: Perfect Your Pout No clown is complete without exaggerated lips. To give your look added interest, paint the left half of your lips red and the right half of your lips black. Use AdGem and glitter to make your lips sparkle! You're Camera Ready! How to Apply Prosthetics: SFX Tutorial, Pt. 23

Meet @brittanylessard, the winner of our Summer SFX Makeup Contest! She is a SFX makeup artist based in LA, and in this blog, we will be sharing her favorite tips and tricks to seamlessly apply prosthetics. SFX Prosthetics 101 What is a SFX prosthetic? A prosthetic is a 3D appliance used to create effects such as injuries, aging, and characters. There are five different types of premade prosthetics: foam latex, slip latex, gelatin, silicone, and transfer.   Prepping for Application Before applying your prosthetic, cleanse the skin with a residue-free cleanser and pat the skin dry. Brittany recommends taking a cotton ball with witch hazel to wipe away excess dirt, oil, or makeup.   Next, place the prosthetic against the area you will be applying it to see how the edges are going to sit against your skin. Adjustments will need to be made prior to applying the adhesive. PRO Tip: Gently tear away any excess material from the prosthetic. This will create jagged edges that are easier to blend in and hide rather than a straight cut you'd get using scissors. Application Apply a small amount of Pros-Aide with a cotton swab to the center of the inside of the prosthetic. Avoid applying adhesive to the edges. Those will be secured in a later step. Set the prosthetic aside to allow the adhesive to dry a little. Next, apply Pros-Aide to your skin where you have centering the prosthetic. This is essential in creating a strong bond and will make it easier to secure the edges. You will know you're ready to apply the prosthetic once the adhesive has changed from a milky white to a slightly translucent shade. Next, carefully line up the prosthetic so that the adhesive makes contact with the adhesive on your skin. Foam prosthetics tend to be very delicate, so take your time to ensure you have it exactly where you want it before pressing it against your skin. Once the prosthetic is positioned in the correct place, press down firmly. Now it's time to work on the edges! Apply a light layer of adhesive to the edges and to your skin, allow it to dry slightly, and press down. Once you have worked your way around the entire perimeter, apply a very light coating of adhesive along the edges to help blend it into your skin. Blending the Edges To ensure the edges of the prosthetic are blended seamlessly into the skin, use a wedge sponge to apply a thin layer of Pros-Aide along the seam where your skin and the prosthetic meet. If you aren't comfortable using a sponge, you may use a q-tip for this step, but be sure to apply the adhesive in very thin layers. Once the glue has dried, repeat this process at least three more times so that the adhesive has filled the gap where the prosthetic meets the skin. If the edges of your prosthetic are thicker, more layers may be needed. Sealing Your Prosthetic The next step is to seal the prosthetic and prep it for paint. If the prosthetic is not sealed properly, the prosthetic will absorb the paint like a sponge and can impact how the paint blends. Using a sponge, apply a thin layer of Pros-Aide over the entire surface of the prosthetic. Once dry, apply a generous amount of translucent powder like Ben Nye's Neutral Set over the prosthetic to take away any tackiness. The powder also helps reduce shine from the adhesive. Take your finger and run it lightly over the prosthetic to check for any areas that may have been missed. You will know you've missed the spots if they're still slightly tacky. Powder those spots, and then you are ready for paint! Painting Your Prosthetic To paint your prosthetic, you can use just about anything like water or alcohol activated paints to creme-based paints and your usual beauty products! Brittany chose a cream foundation shade from the Graftobian Appliance RMG Wheel in Derma Shades to match her skin tone and applied it with a brush before setting it with powder. Since the foundation is too yellow for her complexion, Brittany used a diluted blue tone of alcohol activated paint to color correct and to make the prosthetic look more realistic. Real skin has a variety of shades, so she added "texture" using the splattering technique.   To perform this technique, take a splatter brush or a toothbrush, and dip it into an alcohol activated paint that has been sheered out with an activator. She created a reddish shade to match the tones in her complexion. Once you've created your custom color, run your finger across the bristles to flick the paint onto the prosthetic. If you are spattering near the eyes, be sure to close your eyes while you are flicking the paint. Next, tap your finger lightly against the speckles and spots you created with the speckling technique to soften the appearance. Finally, apply a very thin layer of the foundation or original shade you used to cover the prosthetic to create dimension. This will make the spots you created look like they are a part of your skin instead of just sitting on the surface. Just like that, you have prosthetic perfection! Applying Transfers Another popular and easy-to-use prosthetic is a transfer. Transfers tend to be lightweight, flexible, and comfortable to wear. They're convenient because they already have adhesive along the side that will sit against your skin. Prep the Skin & Position the Transfer Just like with the prosthetic, it's important to cleanse your skin to remove any dirt, oil, or makeup that would prevent the transfer from sticking. Take your time figuring out where you want the transfer because the entire backside is sticky, and once you've started applying it, it's best to keep it in place instead of trying to reposition it. The adhesive will lose a bit of stickiness each time you move it. Apply the Transfer... Slowly! The transfer has several pieces of non-stick paper it is applied to so that you may work in smaller sections. We recommend applying the center section first and working outward. Using one hand, hold the transfer against your skin, and with the other hand, slowly peel away the non-stick paper to expose the sticky transfer. As you peel away the paper, use the hand that is holding the transfer against your skin to press the transfer against the skin as expose more of the adhesive. This will help prevent any air bubbles from getting trapped during the application process. Once you have applied the middle section, start working your way outward. PRO Tip: Always peel the paper away from the center of the transfer and move outward toward the edges. Blend the Edges & Apply Paint The Out-of-Kit transfer Brittany applied has smooth edges that are acetone soluble, meaning they would melt and look more skin-like once acetone was applied. A q-tip dipped into a little bit of acetone will do the trick! To blend it even more and to seal the transfer for paint, apply a thin layer of Pros-Aide across the entire transfer and set it with powder, just like with the prosthetic application shown above. Finally, paint the transfer to achieve the effect you're going for. Since the transfer Brittany applied is a burn transfer, she used alcohol activated paints for a more realistic look. These paints can be sheered out or made more opaque based on the amount of activator you use. This allows you to create a wide range of depth and tones. She added shine to the transfer with Ben Nye Glycerin to mimic fresh skin. Once you're happy with the look you've created, give yourself a light misting of setting spray, and voila! Three Easy Ways to Use Liquid Latex, SFX Tutorial Pt. 19

When it comes to special effects makeup, liquid latex is one of the most versatile products you can add to your kit. However, using this best selling product can be a bit of a challenge for beginners. That's why we partnered with SFX Artist @Caykeface to share three of her favorite ways to use liquid latex. Liquid Latex 101 First, let's talk about what liquid latex is. As you probably guessed, liquid latex is a liquified rubber that is skin-safe and contains ammonia to prevent it from solidifying before use. As a result, it has a rather potent smell, so we recommend using it in a well-ventilated area. It is available in a variety of shades to resemble various skin tones. It is great for sealing modeling wax, can serve as an adhesive for body glitter and lightweight prosthetics, and can be used in a mold to create prosthetics. One of the most popular ways to use liquid latex is to apply it directly to the skin to create a "second-skin". Once it has dried, the elasticity allows it to move and flex like real skin, and it may be manipulated to create effects like aging, blisters, and wounds. PRO TIP: If you or your client have sensitive skin or are sensitive to the smell of ammonia, Ben Nye offers a formula that has less ammonia. Be sure to perform a spot test on the skin before using liquid latex since some individuals are allergic to latex. Tips for Working with Liquid Latex Now that we've discussed what liquid latex is, here are a few important tips to keep in mind while working with it: Application Tips It is important to keep plenty of disposable applicators handy because liquid latex can be extremely hard to remove from brush bristles and other porous surfaces. Applicators like disposable wedge sponges and q-tips are popular choices. Be sure to shake the product well before using. Removal Tips Removing liquid latex can be a tricky feat if you've applied it to a larger area or if you have applied it on top of body hair. To remove smaller sections of liquid latex, soak the area in warm and soapy water or apply a towel that has been soaked in hot water and gently peel it away. For larger areas of those that are harder to remove, consider using a product like Ben Nye Bond Off. Once you have removed the liquid latex, be sure to cleanse the skin and moisturize. How to Create Blisters Start with clean dry skin and use a disposable wedge sponge to apply a thin layer of liquid latex to the area where you want to create the blistered effect. Allow it to dry. This will take a minute or two, but you may speed up the process using a handheld fan. It will become translucent as it dries. Repeat the layering and drying process two to three times. Once the final layer has dried, use a spatula to gently tear open holes into the liquid latex, and push the opened latex on top of itself. Since it is still tacky, it will stick to itself. Next, add some color! Using eyeshadows or your favorite paint (cream-based, water activated, or alcohol activated), color the skin you’ve exposed to be whatever color you want. For an extra gory or realistic wound, add your favorite SFX blood. How to Create a Cut Wound Start with clean dry skin and use a q-tip to paint the liquid latex into the shape you want the cut to resemble. If you want the wound to be a larger open wound, apply the liquid latex to a wider area of your skin.   While the liquid latex is still tacky, rip up small pieces of tissues and lay them down flat on top of the latex, and leave a gap in the middle where you want the cut to be. Let it dry, and then repeat this step at least two to three more times. Set with a powder to remove the shine. Next, use a spatula to tear into the latex and gently pull it open to form the cut. Add eyeshadow, fake blood, and other products to finish the look! Creating Prosthetic Maggots If you want to take your wounds to the next level, consider adding fake maggots! These little liquid latex critters are an easy way to enhance a zombie look or to simply add a bit of fear factor to the wounds you learned how to create using the tips and tricks above. First, paint a few circles of liquid latex onto a stainless steel mixing palette, and allow them to dry. The diameter of the circles will be the same length as the maggots you are creating. Once dry, gently peel them off and place them into the palm of your hand with the sticky side (the side that was facing the stainless steel palette) facing upward. Roll them up, and voila! You have a maggot! The last step is applying your fake maggots. Use a small dab of liquid latex to adhere it to your wound, and you’re all set! More Tutorials Feeling inspired? Once you are happy with the placement, use the q-tip to apply the adhesive around the edges to secure the prosthetic into place. Take a disposable wedge sponge and tap lightly along the edges to help for a secure seal against your skin. Set with a light dusting of powder. Step 2: Start Painting on the Fur Using the Bdellium Tools SFX 193X Small Stippling Brush and the Wolfe FX palette, apply the paint with light strokes to allow the bristles to give you a fur-like appearance. Leave the area around your eyes blank for now. We will apply makeup there later in the tutorial! Step 3: All About the Details Once you have painted fur all the way up to your forehead, let it dry. Next, start adding details like a pink note and use a different color to define the nose bridge and around the mouth. Step 4: Time to Create a Cat Eye! Prime your eyes with an eye primer and create a cat eye using the Ben Nye Studio Color Palette. Next, take the Wolfe FX palette and add dots onto the upper lip for additional feline details. You're Camera Ready! Step 5: Paint the Body Using the Bdellium Tools SFX 195X Large Stippling Brush and the Wolfe FX palette, apply a gradient of colors to your body. Once that paint has dried, apply black stripes around the face and body and white whiskers for additional impact. Finally, add a light coat of mascara and apply false lashes. You're Camera Ready!
